Thampson Mthombeni claimed that he was born in Mzimba in Northern Malawi on 6 June 1902. Later he stayed in South Africa between 1917 and 1926 where he worked as a miner and got married. Later he went back to Malawi and got married to another woman and they had two children before he came to Zimbabwe. He went to Shurugwi where he stayed for about 17 years and witnessed the opening of Peak Mine. Thampson Mthombeni was last reported to be alive in 11 November 2016 when he lived in Njobo village, Mberengwa, Zimbabwe at the claimed age of 114 years, 156+ days.[1][2][3] He was then reported to be oldest living man in Zimbabwe.
