Rodolphe Buxcel (5 September 1908 – 26 February 2019) was an Ukrainian-born American supercentenarian man whose age is currently unvalidated by the Gerontology Research Group.
Biography
Rodolphe Buxcel was born in Chabag, Ukraine, on 5 September 1908. Chabag was a Swiss colony of wine growers which was created in 1822 by the botanist Louis-Vincent Tardent. Of the 10 children in the family, he was the youngest. His father owned 50 hectares of vineyards and 130 hectares of arable land.
On 28 June 1940, the day of the arrival of the Soviets, the Buxcel family lost their land and all of their property. Buxcel and his family left USSR and lived for five years in camps in Germany before arriving in Lausanne at the end of the WWII.
Buxcel was married and had a daughter, Erika (married Spitzke).
In 1951, he decided to go to Uruguay to replant vines on the banks of the Rio Negro river. Later he emigrated to Baroda, Michigan, USA, where he lived independently until he was 109. In December 2017, he moved to the nearby Bridgman's retirement home.
He was fluent in French, Russian, Romanian, Ukrainian, German and Spanish but not in English, claiming that he arrived in the United States aged over 70 and therefore too old to learn a new language.
On 5 September 2018, Buxcel celebrated his 110th birthday. He died on 26 February 2019 at the age of 110 years, 174 days.
