Roberta Evelyn Farris (née Bell; 19 July 1905 – 12 May 2016) was an American supercentenarian who is currently unverified by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG). She was mother of the lawyer Charlye O. Farris (1929-2010).
Roberta Farris was born in Lewisville, Texas, USA on 19 July 1905. Her parents were John Wesley Bell and Minnie Ola (née Woods) Bell. Her family moved to Wichita Falls, Texas in 1910.
Roberta attended Booker T. Washington School in Wichita Falls through the tenth grade and then attended Prairie View Academy. She graduated in 1921 and began her college studies at Prairie View A & M University. After two years of college, Roberta received a certificate from Prairie View and began teaching in Electra, Texas.
In 1924, she became the first black teacher in Electra. In 1927, after a long courtship, she married James Randolph Farris whom she had met while they were students at Prairie View. They both continued to take courses at Prairie View during the summers. Roberta earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in 1937, and Randolph earned his Master's degree and eventually became Superintendent of the Woodland School District in Mexia, Texas. She had two children: Charlye Ola Farris (1929-2010) and James Randolph Farris, Jr. (born 1947). She was widowed in 1960.
In 1973, her daughter Charlye adopted a son, and Roberta named him Troy in honor of her older brother who died in 1910 at the age of 8. She retired from teaching in May 1973. In 1984, her son Randy and his wife Deborah had one son named James Randolph Farris, III.
Roberta Farris died in Wichita Falls, Texas, USA on 12 May 2016 at the age of 110 years, 298 days. She is survived by one son, Dr. James Randolph Farris, one daughter-in-law Deborah Farris, two grandsons Dr. Troy Kevin Farris and James Randolph Farris, III and several cousins.
