Dr. Robert Wiener (27 October 1908 – 17 February 2019) was a Canadian supercentenarian whose age is currently unvalidated by the Gerontology Research Group.
Biography[]
Dr. Wiener was born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada on 27 October 1908. After graduating from Baron Byng High School, Wiener attended Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario. He then went to McGill University and graduated in dentistry in 1936, following in his older brother’s footsteps. He won the faculty’s gold medal and began a residency at the Montreal General Hospital. He continued his studies at the University of Chicago, where he earned a master’s degree in pathology.
He was married to Ella Wiener (née Levites) for 72 years. They had three children. He worked as an oral surgeon. When interviewed about the secret of his longevity at age 106, he replied: "“You have to keep busy, busy, busy. [...] Don’t sit for more than an hour at a time. Get up and move around. Get exercise — physical and mental.”
Wiener became the oldest known living man in Canada upon the death of 110-year-old Zoltan Sarosy on 19 June 2017. Wiener himself turned 110 in October 2018. His older brother, David Wiener (1902-2011), lived to the age of 109 years, 324 days, potentially making them the oldest brothers of all time.
Wiener died on 17 February 2019 at the age of 110 years, 113 days. After his death, South Korean-born Ja Hyung Lee became the oldest known living man in Canada, and New Brunswick’s Arnold Hawkins became the oldest known living Canadian-born man.
