Richard Stanley Shaw (29 August 1913 – 5 January 2020), known to his family as "Uncle Dick", was a Northern Irish centenarian who was the oldest known man in Northern Ireland at the time of his death.

Biography

Richard Shaw was born in Killyman, Ireland, UK (now Northern Ireland, UK) on 29 August 1913, the third of seven children of Robert and Martha Shaw.

He working around 40 years at a linen mill in Moygashel before retiring to care for his brother Joseph. He never married but was devoted to his church, where he organised a weekly mission for years.

He rode a bicycle until age 95. He lived with his family until he was 103 and only moved into a care home after breaking his hip.

In 2019, he celebrated his 105th birthday with a telegram from the Queen and a visit from the former Mayor of Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council, Julie Flaherty.

Richard Shaw died at Hockley care home in Armagh, Northern Ireland, UK on 5 January 2020 at the age of 106 years, 129 days. He was survived by his nephew Clarence Wallace (aged 90 in 2020).
