Nara was born in Nagabuchi, Ome, Tokyo Prefecture, Japan, on 8 February 1909. She moved to Hachioji with her family while she was attending a middle school. Before the Second World War, she managed a textile-related company called Yoriya (Japanese: よりや). She loved making Temari after the war. She had 8 children. Even in her centenarian years, she was able to walk.
In February 2019, she celebrated her 110th birthday. In September 2019, she lived with her eldest son, Hayashi (aged 85 at the time), and his 4 children.
