Biography

Mangold was born on 14 November 1907 in Nebraska, United States. She remembers the 1918 Spanish Flu epidemic. She also has memories of soldiers returning from World War I. She met her husband, Walter S. Mangold, in Southern California. He worked in public health and she had a job as a secretary in a health department in Los Angeles, where she lived during the Great Depression.

During the 1940s, the couple moved to Berkeley, California, where Walter became a professor at UC Berkeley. He helped to found the field of environmental health. They had one son together, Donald.

Mangold continued to drive until the age of 95. Up until her centenarian years, she would collect oranges from her tree to make marmalade for her neighbours. During her supercentenarian years, she has been wheelchair-bound.

Mangold’s grandmother lived to be 95, and her sister to almost 101. She currently lives in an assisted living facility in El Cerrito, California, United States, at the age of 113 years, 20 days.
