Mercina Maria dos Santos (14 February 1902? – 6 August 2015) was a Brazilian supercentenarian whose age is currently unvalidated by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG).
Biography[]
Mercina Maria dos Santos claimed to have been born on 14 February 1902, in the city of Itabuna (then the part of Ilheus), Bahia, Brazil. She married her first and only boyfriend. They had 13 children, only six of which were alive in 2012.
At the age of 110, she said: What I did was just working. Working in the fields, planting of beans, corn and rice to raise children. Even in her centenarian years, she was able to remember her youth. In 2012, she had more than 60 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren. Even as a supercentenarian, she had an active life. She was able to wash clothes, plates and even to help with housekeeping. At some point, she have lost her sight due to a cataract. She have spent her last years in the neighborhood of Monte Cristo, Itabuna.
Mercina Maria dos Santos died in "Hospital de Base de Itabuna", Itabuna, Bahia, Brazil, on 6 August 2015 at age of 113 years, 173 days.
