Maximina claimed to have been born on 10 September 1903 in Sao Goncalo de Soem (present-day city of Araripina), Pernambuco, Brazil. Her parents were Jose Pereira de Sousa and Luisa Rodrigues da Silva. Maximina was the youngest of 10 siblings and was raised by her mother and older brother. She claimed that the years of 1914 and 1915 were the greatest ordeal of her life, Northeast Region of Brazil went through one of the biggest droughts in history, many families (including her family) were feeding only with macambira and a native fruit called mucuna. For some time, she was under the care of her godfather, Pedro Betim, who lived in the state of Ceara.
Between 1930s and 1950s, she lived in many places of Pernambuco, Ceara and Maranhao. In 1958, she moved to Valenca do Piaui, Piaui. She married Jose Rodrigues Pereira da Silva and they had 10 children. Her husband passed away while Maximina was pregnant with her last child. In 2017, she had poor vision problems and she could hardly see anything.
Pereira da Silva died on 10 June 2018 in Valenca do Piaui, Piaui, Brazil at the claimed age of 114 years, 273 days. She was survived by 5 children, 36 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren.
