On 1 February 1930, Esop witnessed the lynching of James Irwin, a black man accused of murder, by an angry mob who were members of the Ku Klux Klan. Esop Wilcox died in 1971 after 43 years of marriage. Ivy retired from nursing in 1973 after the death of her employer.

Frederick Ivy was Mattie’s second husband, whom she married in 1976. The couple moved to New Jersey and lived there until Frederick’s death in 1994. Ivy remained in New Jersey until 2001, when she moved back to Ocilla, Georgia. She had no children with either of her husbands. In 2011, she received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Ocilla-Irwin Chamber of Commerce.
