Masazo Nonaka [Japanese: 野中正造] (25 July 1905 – 20 January 2019) sometimes spelled Masazou Nonaka, was a validated Japanese supercentenarian who was the world's oldest living man from the death of Francisco Nunez Olivera on 29 January 2018 until his own death nearly a year later.

Biography

Masazo Nonaka was born in Kamitoshibetsu, Ashoro, Hokkaido on 25 July 1905 as the eldest son of Masujiro and Kiyo Nonaka. His mother was founder of onsen (Japanese hot spring) "Nonaka". He had two brothers and three sisters (all now deceased). He married Hatsuno Nonaka and had 5 children (2 living).

Nonaka lived in Ashoro, Hokkaido. He was the oldest living person in the Hokkaido Prefecture since the death of Teru Hatakeyama (who was just five days older than him) on 3 April 2016 and the oldest living man in Japan since the death of Masamitsu Yoshida on 29 October 2016.

On 25 July 2017, Nonaka celebrated his 112th birthday. Following the death of Israel Kristal on 11 August 2017, Nonaka was, at that time, the oldest living man validated by the Gerontology Research Group. However, the subsequent validation of Francisco Nunez Olivera meant that Nonaka was recognised as being the oldest living man following the death of Nunez Olivera on 29 January 2018. He was officially recognised by Guinness World Records on 10 April 2018.

On 25 July 2018, Nonaka celebrated his 113th birthday, and was the fourth validated Japanese man and the world's 18th validated man to do so. On 7 October 2018, when surpassing the age of Mie Ishiguro, Nonaka became the oldest person ever born in Hokkaido prefecture (Hatsue Ono, the oldest person ever from Hokkaido prefecture, was born in Iwate prefecture).

Nonaka died in his sleep on 20 January 2019 in Ashoro, Hokkaido, Japan at the age of 113 years, 179 days. Upon his death, Chitetsu Watanabe became the oldest validated living man in the world (though his case was not validated until June 2019).
