Biography

Hurley was born on a sheep station near Young, New South Wales, Australia, on 4 May 1880. She spent her youth working on the property before moving to Sydney where she worked as a receptionist at the Lewisham Hospital. Hurley later settled in the Waverley district and worked in David Jones. According to the director of Loreto Nursing Home, Jennifer Rebbechi, Hurley once told a reporter she had not married because she was ill at the age 35, and she believed she had one day to live. After that, she said she was too fragile to marry. She also said she had never met a man that she would like to marry.

On 4 April 1989, Hurley became the oldest living person in Australia following the death of 109-year old Agnes Dodds. She spent last 30 years of her life living at the Loreto Nursing Home. At the age of 109, she used to read romantic novels.

Hurley died at the Loreto Nursing Home in Bronte, New South Wales, Australia, on 16 November 1990, at the age of 110 years, 196 days.
