Brown was born in Forest City, North Carolina, United States, on 4 July 1909. She came to West Virginia at the age of 9 where she lived at Holden, being raised by her aunt. Brown and her husband, Walter A. Brown, were married for 75 years. They had seven children, four daughters and three sons. The family moved to Braeholm on Buffalo Creek in the 1960s. In 1972, they lost their home in the Buffalo Creek disaster. The family then moved to Proctor Bottom at Amherstdale. Brown worked for many years as head cook at Buffalo High School, before becoming a social worker for PRIDE Community Services in Logan County.
