Biography
Marietta Bouverne was born as the daughter of the working class family of Arthur Bouverne and his wife Maria Bracke, in the Ghent Dampoort district, on 25 December 1908. Bouverne attended the Emile Brauninstituut where the lessons were still entirely given in French at that time. She followed a training as a secretary, a position she held for many years. Bouverne married Albertus Dekens in Anderlecht in 1932. Later on, the couple returned to Ghent where Albert died in 1960. They had no children.
Bouverne lived in an apartment near the Blaarmeersen until she moved into Huize Arion in Zwijnaarde in 2004, aged 95. When the care home was closed in April 2017, she had to temporarily change her residence until the new nursing home Zilversterre was opened in December of that year. Bouverne remained active until old age. She was mainly interested in cultural topics. After her 100th birthday she started modeling. In addition, she also liked pets; especially cats.
On 25 December 2018, she turned 110 years of age, being the third oldest living person in Belgium at the time. Bouverne became the oldest living person in Belgium, following the death of Elisabeth De Proost on 25 January 2020. She died in Ghent, East Flanders, Belgium on 3 August 2020 at the age of 111 years, 222 days. After her death, 111-year-old Maria Van Hool became the oldest living person in Belgium.
