Anne Marie Carstenson [also Carstensen] (née Jensen; 24 January 1849 – 30 March 1958) was a Danish-American centenarian. She was the world's oldest living person from the death of Jennie Howell on 16 December 1956 until her own death on 30 March 1958, aged 109 years, 65 days. She was succeeded as oldest living person by Nancy Ryan.

Biography

Anne Marie Jensen was born in Bakkeboelle, Vordingborg, Sjaelland, Denmark on 24 January 1849. She emigrated to the Wisconsin, United States around 14 September/October 1869 and married Anders Carstensen on 29 October 1869, near Green Bay, Wisconsin, three weeks after her arrival to the US. She had seven children. In 1880, with husband and five children she moved to Leigh, Nebraska. In 1882, her son Carl, was born. Her eldest daughter, Anna, passed away in 1886. One month later, her husband passed away. Marie has made two trips to her native country, Denmark, in 1897 and 1911.

Later, when Lutheran church was built in Leigh, she and her family united with that church. Last eleven years of her life, she lived with her daughter, Laura Matzen. At the time of her death, she had 25 grandchildren, 59 great-grandchildren and 17 great-great-grandchildren. Her daughter, Minnie Anderson, passed away on 5 March 1958.

Carstenson passed away in St. Edward, Nebraska on 30 March 1958 at about 01:15 PM, at the age of 109 years, 65 days. She was survived by a daughter, Laura Matzen and two sons, John and Laurence.
