Maria Schmitz was born in Rhine, Prussia (now Germany) on 27 August 1886 and passed away in North-Rhine Westphalia, Germany on 22 October 1996 at the age of 110 years, 56 days. Her case was validated by the Gerontology Research Group on 30 March 2004. At the time of her death, she was the second-oldest person in Germany behind Pauline Spyra.
