Maria Farrugia [née Galea] (born 7 March 1912) is a Maltese supercentenarian who is currently the oldest person ever from Malta, as well as the first to reach the age of 110. Her age is validated by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG).

Biography[]

Maria Farrugia was born as Maria Galea in Mosta, Northern Region, Malta on 7 March 1912. Her mother lived to be 100. She had four siblings. One of her siblings was killed by a bomb during one of Malta’s very first air raids at the age of 37.

She was brought up in Hamrun, and recalls the time when she used to wash clothes at the Ghajn tal-Hasselin, a communal washing area in Msida. She was a first-class seamstress, and she used to do sewing for others in order to supplement the family income.

Farrugia had three children: Josephine (now deceased), Angelo (now deceased), and Carmen. She was widowed in 1962.

On 7 December 2021 she surpassed the age of Connie Galea (1890–2000) of 109 years, 275 days, becoming the oldest known person ever in Malta.

In March 2022, she celebrated her 110th birthday, becoming the first ever Maltese supercentenarian (excluding exaggerated claim of Ganni Schembri).

Farrugia currently lives with her daughter Carmen and her grandson Stephen in Hamrun, Southern Region, Malta at the age of 112 years, 43 days.
