Margarete Ottmann was born in Jernau, German Empire (now a district of Baborów, Opole Voivodeship, Poland) on 23 February 1903. She was trained as a master gardener. In 1945 she and her family flew to Neukirchen bei Sulzbach, Bavaria in consequence of the expulsion since 1944. Her husband died in 1960.

On her 103rd birthday Ottmann was reported to keep her mobility by taking at minimum 500 steps a day. She also traced her longevity to renounce to sugar, cigarettes and alcohol. She lived with her family until age 110, becoming physical weak but staying quiet clear-headed. She was interested in actual developments of politics and society.
