Margaret Josephine "Peg" O'Connell (née Flood; 27 February 1905 – 20 December 2014) was an Irish centenarian who was the oldest known living person in Ireland for the final 2 years of her life.

Biography

O'Connell was born as Margaret Josephine Flood in County Donegal, Ireland (then part of the UK) on 27 February 1905. She was arrested several times by the British during the Irish Civil War, and hid messages in her hair. She met Tom O'Connell in 1922, and were married on 16 June 1923. They had five children, only one of whom was living as of 2013.

O'Connell barely talked and often slept during her final years. She credited her longevity to never drinking alcohol. She became Ireland's oldest living person following the death of Mary Kate Byrne on 31 December 2012. She died on 20 December 2014 at the age of 109 years, 296 days. After her death, then-108-year old Molly Madden became the oldest living person in Ireland.
