Mamie May Tarver (née Murphy; 18 April 1907 – 19 December 2017) was an American supercentenarian whose age is currently unvalidated by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG). She was the third-oldest known living person in New Jersey, USA, behind Mary Jorden and Helen Turner.
Biography
Mamie Tarver was born as Mamie May Murphy in Henry, Alabama, USA to parents Franklin and Nancy (née Guilford) Murphy on 18 April 1907. She had several siblings. The family moved to Cranford, New Jersey when Mamie was 15.
In the 1920s, Mamie married Peter Tarver and had seven children with him: Margaret, James, Harold, Geraldine, George, Eric, and Nancy. She was later widowed.
Tarver is the great-aunt of former Cranford Police Chief Eric Mason. During her centenarian years, Mamie took no medication. On her 106th birthday in 2013, she was congratulated by then-President Barack Obama and then-First Lady Michelle Obama. She was also sent a birthday letter by Willard Scott of the NBC’s Today Show.
Tarver celebrated her 110th birthday in April 2017 by having a party with a lot of her family in attendance. Along with her eight children, she had 25 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, and 5 great-great-grandchildren.
Mamie Tarver passed away in Cranford, New Jersey, USA, on 19 December 2017, at the age of 110 years, 245 days.
