Rose was born Julia Espirito Santo Machado, in the village of Campo Raso, Madalena, Pico Island, Portugal on 27 January 1902. She was the third child born to Manuel Rodrigues Machado (1873–1959) and Felicidade do Espirito Santo (1873–1963). She had five brothers and two sisters.
Rose departed to the United States aboard the ship Britania, which sailed from Horta, Faial Island, on 25 September 1922, with her uncle, Antonio Machado. On 2 December 1922, Rose married Jose (Joseph) da Rosa in Atwater, California. Her husband was also born in Candelaria. He passed away in 1973, aged 78. They had two children. Following their marriage, the couple moved to Santa Clara, California and eventually settled in San Jose, California. Julia got a job in a cannery where she made 31 cents an hour.
After her husband's death, Rose remained at the family home until the age of 99 when she moved into the little house next to her daughter and son-in-law, Margaret and George Jenott. In 2002, Julia sold the properties and moved to Santa Cruz, California where she lived for the next nine years. At the age of 103, Rose had 14 great-grandchildren and 7 great-great-grandchildren. At that time, her granddaughter Jamie Jenott lived with her and helped her around the house, but Rose was still able to cook and clean by herself. Rose said that the secret to a long life is to eat your main meal in the middle of the day and chase it down with a cup of coffee laced with a couple of tablespoons of homemade Kahlua. One of her sisters passed away in 2004 at the age of 103 and another sister was 94 years old in 2005. Her son, Lester Rose, passed away in December 2005.
In late 2011, she and Jamie moved to Port Angeles, Washington. She was a member of numerous Portuguese societies such as Council Senhora de Lourdes (for 84 years), Bom Jesus, Our Lady of Fatima and St. Anthony. She was a dedicated soap opera fan of the Young and the Restless, the Bold and the Beautiful, One Life to Live and General Hospital.
Rose passed away in Washington, United States on 21 September 2012 at the age of 110 years, 238 days.
