He was the oldest verified living man in Japan from the death of 116-year-old Jiroemon Kimura on June 12, 2013 until his own death on July 23, 2013, at the age of 111 years, 178 days. After his death, Sakari Momoi became the oldest verified living man in Japan. After the death of James McCoubrey, he was briefly recognized as the world's oldest living man but Salustiano Sanchez was discovered to have been older than both Ikarashi and McCoubrey. He at the time of death was the second oldest living man behind Sanchez.

Biography

Before his retirement, Ikarashi used to work as a farmer. When he was younger, he often stated that he wanted to become a centenarian, and on his 110th birthday, he joked that he "forgot to die". He had four children, eleven grandchildren, twenty-two great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild. He never suffered from any major injuries or illnesses, apart from a fall from a tree at age 91 which resulted in a broken left foot. Ikarashi ate three meals every day, enjoyed singing, and avoided alcohol and tobacco (which he credited for his longevity). In June 2013, he was reported to be spending most of his time in bed. At the time of his death, he lived at a nursing home in Sanjo City, Niigata Prefecture, Japan.
