Joao Jose Dias (8 September 1902 – 6 November 2013) was a Brazilian supercentenarian claimant whose age is currently unvalidated by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG).


Joao was born on 8 September 1902, according to his birth record. In the then Vila de Jurema, District-Parish of São Raimundo Nonato, Piaui. The municipality did not yet exist, and when it was emancipated it was 10 years old. Today the municipality of Várzea Branca-PI is located.

As a tradition in the Northeast of Brazil, as a young man he became a cowboy, being a good cowboy. Around 1920. At that time, being a cowboy was synonymous with status. And be a good cowboy, even more. Joao gained fame in the region. Currently his age was highlighted.

With many stories to tell. at 111 years of age, he was still active. Many droughts faced, a lot of struggle and a lot of suffering. He worked on the railroad for over 90 years.

According to his grandchildren, he had little illness. He refused a sedentary life. He built a huge family. Following that tradition of backcountry families, at that time. Large families. There are 30 children. Adding grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-grandchildren, there are more than 500 descendants.
