Biography

Jean McCarthy was born Jean Walker in Bendigo, Victoria, Australia (where her Scottish grandparents settled in 1852 in their quest for gold) on 4 May 1908. She had two brothers named Jim and Don. She received tuition in singing from the age of three and, with her brothers, performed in patriotic concerts and pantomimes during World War 1. She recalls the street celebrations at the end of said war.

In 1926, aged 18, she rode her first motorbike. Over a decade later, in 1937, she married Frank McCarthy and had a daughter, Heather, with him. One of her bridesmaids was Mary Crean, the wife of former Deputy Prime Minister Frank Crean. On her 100th birthday, two of her bridesmaids attended the celebrations. All were deceased by her 110th birthday. In 2018, aged 110, she likes to watch football on the television and is amazed by current technology.

Jean McCarthy currently lives in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia at the age of 113 years, 145 days. She is the second-oldest known person in Victoria behind Mary Sadler.
