Ja Hyung Lee (27 August 1910 – 12 February 2022) was a Korean-born Canadian supercentenarian whose age is currently unvalidated by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG). At the time of his death, he was the oldest known living man in Canada, and the second-oldest known living male emigrant in the world, behind Delio Venturotti.
Biography[]
Ja Hyung Lee was born in Busan, Korea on 27 August 1910.
In Korea, he operated a jewelry store until his retirement , after which he moved to Sao Paulo, Brazil for about a decade. He moved to Canada when he was around 80 years.
His wife died around 2012 at the age of 92. On his 106th birthday in 2016, his family took him on an Alaskan cruise.
Following the death of Robert Wiener on 17 February 2019, he was believed to be the oldest living man in Canada.
As of his 109th birthday in 2019, he had three sons, two daughters, 15 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.
On 14 January 2021 at the age of 110, he received his first dose of the Pfizer/BionTech COVID-19 vaccine, making him one of oldest people to receive the COVID-19 vaccine.
Ja Hyung Lee died in Amenida Seniors’ Community in Surrey, British Columbia, Canada on 12 February 2022 at the age of 111 years, 169 days. At the time of his death, he was the second-oldest known living Asian-born man, behind Mikizo Ueda, and the third-oldest known living person in British Columbia, behind Shige Mineshiba and Mabel Mah. Following his death, Reuben Sinclair became the oldest known living man in Canada.
