Centenarian

Istvanne Morocz (née Zsuzsanna Virag) [Hungarian: Mórocz Istvánné Virág Zsuzsanna] (6 February 1890 – 23 October 1998) was a Hungarian centenarian. At the time of her death, she was to oldest living person in the country.

Biography

Zsuzsanna was born on 6 February 1890, in the village of Dég, Austria-Hungary (present-day Hungary). She was the third out of four children.

In the village where she grew up, Zsuzsanna was famous for her beautiful voice and for the reason ‘she knew all songs by heart’. She married to István Mórocz at a young age, they had four children (Zsuzsanna outlived one of them). She was an agricultural worker in all her life. In 1962, Zsuzsanna moved to Veresegyház with her son.

As a centenarian, Zsuzsanna was alert and was in good physical condition. At her 102th birthday, she danced for hours. She would occasionally sing songs from her youth as well. She became the oldest living person in Hungary likely before her 106th birthday. In her last year, she had to move to a care home in Veresegyház. At age 108, she could still read without glasses and took no medication. At that time, she had seven grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, 23 great-great-grandchildren and one great-great-great-grandchild.

Zsuzsanna died on 23 October 1998 due to heart failure, in Veresegyház, at the age of 108 years, 259 days.
