Ida Schlesinger was born Ida Ruth Cohen on 7 November 1902 in New Castle, Clearfield, Pennsylvania to parents Harry and Bessie (née Zieve) Cohen as one of 8 children. She was a teacher until her first marriage to Marvin Kohen. They moved to Shaker Heights, Ohio. Ida was widowed in 1932.
