Dorothy Gwendoline "Gwen" Payne (née Attenborough; 5 August 1907 – 15 October 2019) was a British supercentenarian who was the oldest living person in the United Kingdom at the time of her death. Her age is currently unvalidated by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG).
Biography
Payne was born on 5 August 1907 in Bromley, London, England to Ralph and Dorothy (née Williams) Attenborough. When she finished primary school, her father attempted to enroll her in university, but she failed her exam, so instead attended the Slade School of Fine Art.
Payne married John Payne in 1939. The couple were married until John's death in 1961 at the age of 48. They had two sons, Nicholas and Sebastian. The couple moved into a cottage in 1946, where Gwen lived for the rest of her life.
Payne became the oldest living person in the United Kingdom following the death of Grace Catherine Jones on 7 June 2019. In August 2019, Payne celebrated her 112th birthday. She died in Sevenoaks, Kent, England on 15 October 2019, at the age of 112 years, 71 days. Following her death, Hilda Clulow became the UK's oldest living person.
