Gusztav Karoly [Hungarian: Károly Gusztáv] (19 June 1902 – c. 7 October 2008) was a Hungarian centenarian. At the time of his death, he was the oldest known living male in Hungary.

Biography

Gusztáv Károly was born on 19 June 1902, in Kaposvár, Austria-Hungary (present-day Hungary). He was one of seven siblings. In 1906, the family moved to Keszthely, which was his mother’s birth town. He wanted to be a timber industry engineer, but when he lost his father at 17, he had to leave school and start working hard in order to help his family.

Gusztáv worked as a carpenter. He officially retired in 1962, but he would still work in his workshop until the age of 96. During WWII, he was a forced labourer and had to build roads. He was in Soviet captivity for four years. He returned home in 1948. He never married nor had children.

In 2000, Gusztáv moved from Keszthely to live with one of his younger brother’s family in Hévíz. Although his physical condition deteriorated during his centenarian years, he was still mentally sharp and had a wide knowledge.

A month before his 106th birthday, Gusztáv got kidney stone disease. He eventually died on c. 7 October 2008, in Hévíz, at the age of c. 106 years, 110 days. At the time of his death, he was probably the oldest living man in Hungary.
