Grace Thaxton was born in Rockland, New York on 18 June 1891 to Peter and Harriett (Hardenburgh) Menges. She was the oldest person in Kentucky, the fourth-oldest person in the U.S. and the seventh-oldest documented person in the world at the time of her death. She also became New York state's all-time recordholder on 28 May 2005, aged 113 years, 344 days, breaking the record set by Mae Harrington in December 2002.[1]

Thaxton almost lived to see her son Robert Thaxton (1915–2011) turn 90 on 12 July 2005. Thaxton's mother, Harriet Menges (1860–1969) lived to 109. Thaxton's maternal grandmother, Esther Pauline Hardenburgh (1838–1936), was nearly 98 years old. Thaxton's paternal grandfather, Peter Menges (1817–1915), also lived for nearly 98 years. [2][3]
