Carolyn Fritzi Bryant (née Schassberger; born 1 January 1914) is an American centenarian who is one of the oldest known survivors of COVID-19, having recovered from the disease at the age of 106. She is also the grandmother of KING 5 chief investigative reporter Susannah Frame.


Bryant was born in Oroville, Washington, USA on 1 January 1914, the fourth oldest of five children. Her parents were Carl Schassberger, a German immigrant and Anne (née Kitzler) Schassberger, a Hungarian immigrant.

As a young girl, her family was one of the founders of Longview, Washington, where she played gigs throughout the area with her three sisters. Her family moved to Yakima, Washington when she was age 18.

She married Frank Bryant in Yakima, Washington, USA on 16 April 1933. The couple had seven children: Frederick Bryant (1934–1982), Nancy Frame (aged 85 in January 2021), Carolyn Scheyer, Barry Bryant (1940–1997), Bruce David Bryant, Frank Hollis Bryant Jr. and Stanley C. Bryant. The couple would eventually wind up in Escondido, California, where Frank went into the avocado business, and Bryant started a design business for the Golden Door Spa. One of the spa customers was Elizabeth Taylor.

Her husband died in 1995 and she returned to Yakima, Washington in 2009.

Later, she became a professional seamstress and fashion designer. She continued to sew, do alterations as well as design until the age of 101. In December 2018, she fell and broke her right shoulder and pelvis at an assisted-living center and was moved to Landmark where she recuperated and began to walk again.

On 20 April 2020, she tested positive for COVID-19; however, as of 15 June 2020, she successfully recovered.

As of June 2020, she had 21 grandchildren (including Susannah Frame), 47 great-grandchildren, and 10 great-great grandchildren.

Bryant currently lives at Landmark Care and Rehabilitation in Yakima, Washington, USA, at the age of 107 years, 214 days.
