Florence Anna Boggs (née Ross; 16 November 1903 - 15 May 2016) was an American supercentenarian noted for being California's oldest verified resident at the time of her death..[1][2][3]

Biography

Florence was born in Brooklyn, New York, Navy to chief petty officer Robert Ross and his wife Leona.[4] As a teen, she worked in one of New York’s Carnegie libraries, where she was paid 10 cents an hour to wash the pages of the books with soap and water.

When she and her family moved to Syracuse, New York, Florence enrolled at the city's university. Disliking the cold weather, she sailed alone to San Francisco in 1923, aboard the USS Manchria.[4] She later enrolled at the University of Oregon, where she met her future husband, Clifton Boggs.

The couple married in 1929, and had two daughters. They were married for 62 years until Clifton's death in 1992.[5]

Her son-in-law is Ed Victor, a prominent literary agent who has received an Order of the Empire (OBE). He is married to Florence's daughter Carol.
