Flarid Berta Lagerlund (née Karlsson; 8 February 1910 – 9 April 2022) was a Swedish supercentenarian who was the oldest known living person in Sweden and the Nordic region at the time of her death. Her age is currently unvalidated by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG).
Biography[]
Flarid Berta Lagerlund was born in Spanga, Sweden on 8 February 1910. Her parents were Axel Teodor Karlsson (1863–1919) and Fredrika Johannesdotter (1860–1943). Fredrika was 49 when Flarid was born.
Lagerlund's parents emigrated to the United States in the late 19th century. Around the turn of the century, they returned to Sweden. She had three older brothers. She attended school for seven years and then worked various different jobs, such as cable manufacturing companies, sewing studios, and test kitchens.
She got married in 1937 with Karl Alvar Lagerlund. They cycled around whole Sweden. After World War II, they drove to Germany. After toddler period, she worked at the port of Stockholm in 25 years until she retired.
At the age of 99, she moved to Taby, Angaren from Tallkrogen to be closer to her daughter Monica, who had lived in Taby for a long time and wanted to have her mother close.
She became the oldest known living person in Stockholm, following the death of Hertha Akerlind on 10 July 2018, the oldest woman in Sweden, following the death of Ada Persson on 8 March 2019, as well as the oldest known living person in Sweden, following the death of Carl Mattsson 24 July 2019.
In February 2020, Lagerlund celebrated her 110th birthday at the Angaren retirement home in Taby, Stockholm.
She became the last surviving person in Sweden born in 1910, following the death of Signe Lundqvist on 23 September 2020.
She became the oldest living person in the Nordic Countries, following the death of Karla Lindholm Jensen of Denmark on 10 December 2020.
She also became the last surviving person in the Nordic region born in 1910, following the death of Gudrun Nymoen of Norway on 8 July 2021.
On 8 February 2022, Lagerlund turned 112 years old, making her the first person in Sweden to reach this age since Astrid Zachrison in 2007, and the first Swedish-born person to reach this age since Esther Ecklund in 2013.
Lagerlund died in Angaren, Taby, Stockholm, Sweden on 9 April 2022 at the age of 112 years, 60 days, passing the oldest living Scandinavian title to Astrid Qvist of Finland (6 March 1912 – 18 July 2022), oldest living person in Sweden to Finnish-born Gunborg Hancock (born 20 April 1912), and the oldest living Swedish-born person to Agnes Bostrom (born 29 April 1912). Her funeral was held on 27 April 2022
