Mikizo Ueda [Japanese: 上田幹藏] (11 May 1910 – 9 September 2022) was a Japanese supercentenarian whose age is currently unvalidated by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG). He had been the oldest known living man in Japan since the death of Motoi Fukunishi on 22 August 2020, as well as the oldest known living veteran of World War II since the death of Mollie Walker on 22 January 2022, until his death.
Biography[]
Mikizo Ueda was born in Kyoto City, Kyoto Prefecture, Japan on 11 May 1910. He was the only son of a textile worker.
Ueda worked for the Wakayama Prefectural Office. He served in the Japanese Navy during the Second World War, and he also witnessed the Hiroshima bombing.
In September 2017, Ueda was reported as the oldest known living man in Nara Prefecture.
On 22 August 2020, Ueda became the oldest known living man in Japan, following the death of Motoi Fukunishi.
On 17 April 2021, Ueda surpassed the age of Tessaku Tominaga, and became the oldest known man ever to have lived in Nara Prefecture.
Following the death of Mollie Walker on 22 January 2022, Ueda became the oldest known living veteran of World War II.
In September 2022, Ueda was reported as the oldest known living person in Nara Prefecture.
Mikizo Ueda died in Nara City, Nara Prefecture, Japan on 9 September 2022 at the age of 112 years, 121 days. He is currently the second-oldest known man ever born in Kyoto Prefecture (behind Jiroemon Kimura), the first known Japanese man to reach the ages of 111 and 112 since the death of Chitetsu Watanabe on 23 Febuary 2020, and was the last known surviving Japanese man born in 1910 since Kozaburo Nojima went to limbo on 1 Febuary 2021. He was also among the last known surviving Japanese men to have been born during the Meiji era.
At the time of his death, he was the fourth-oldest known living man in the world, behind Juan Vicente Perez Mora, Eusebio Quintero Lopez, and Efrain Antonio Rios Garcia.
