Biography

Leonora Cox was born as Leonora Margaret Valentine in Hatfield, England, UK on 30 December 1907. Her father died aged 43 of injuries sustained while fighting in World War 1, while both her mother and maternal grandmother lived to be 98.

As a young adult, she travelled to many European countries, including Switzerland and Germany. By 1932, she was living in Sussex, England, where she married silversmith Harry Cox and had a son, Harry Jr., with him.

The family moved to the United States in 1938, and struggled to find work as the US was still suffering from effects of the Great Depression. Harry found a job with General Motors, and later joined the US Army. In his later life, Harry served in the Pacific War Theater.

Harry died in 1972 after 40 years of marriage. As a centenarian, Leonora used a walking stick and had lost her sight to glaucoma. By her 110th birthday in 2017, she was living in a nursing home and celebrated becoming a supercentenarian with her family and friends. Her age was validated by the GRG on 28 January 2020.

Cox died in Fairfield, Connecticut, USA on 6 April 2020 at the age of 112 years, 98 days.
