Centenarian

Josip Krsul (Croatian: Josip Kršul; 10 December 1911 – 5 March 2021) was a Croatian centenarian who was the oldest known living person in Croatia at the time of his death. He is also the oldest known man to ever live in Croatia.

Biography[]

Krsul was born in Selce, Austria-Hungary (now located in Primorje-Gorski Kotar County, Croatia) on 10 December 1911. After finishing school in Selce and Crikvenica, Josip was educated as an electrician in Belgrade, Serbia. After finishing school, he returned to his birthplace where he was unable to find a job. He went to Sibenik where he became a telegraphist. His father, Jakov Krsul, and his older brother who was named after his father, moved to Peru and did not return. At the beginning of World War II, he arrived to Galveston, Texas. Later, he joined the United States Army. In 1945, Krsul participated in the Battle of Iwo Jima. After that, he got American citizenship. He moved to California after the war. He spent most of his time in San Francisco, working in Western Union.

Krsul married Milica (1916–2005), a Croatian woman born in the United States. The couple had no children. He moved back to Croatia around 2011. His sister Jelena Jelicic died on 12 May 2015 at the age of 102.

He had been the oldest living man in Croatia since the death of 106-year-old Sime Petrovic on 23 January 2017, and since the death of 108-year-old Andja Peric on 7 February 2019, he had also been the oldest living person in Croatia. On 23 June 2019, he surpassed the age of Ante Toni Beritic (1895–2002), becoming the oldest man who ever lived in Croatia (although one Croatian emigrant has lived longer, Ezio Ongaro of Italy).

Josip Krsul died during the early hours of the morning on 5 March 2021 in Selce, Primorje-Gorski Kotar County, Croatia at the age of 109 years, 86 days. Following his death, then, 105-year-old Dundo Bozo Kralj, became the oldest known living man in Croatia.
