Biography[]

Early Life[]

Martin was born at Herbert’s Post Office, a logging camp in Northern Michigan, USA on 18 August 1910, the youngest of nine children born to Nelson and Nellie (McIntyre) Persons. After Herbert’s P.O., her family moved to West Branch, where her father worked on a farm. Later, they moved to Saginaw. She graduated from Saginaw High School in 1927 and worked for Bell Telephone.

Martin married Arthur, a tool and dye maker, in 1928. The couple had five children: two sons, Jack and James (both deceased) and three daughters (Mary Louise, who died in infancy, Shirley, who died in 2021 and Judith, who is still alive). They moved to Detroit, and she worked at Detroit Diesel until the end of the World War II. Arthur died in 1972.

Later Life[]

Martin lived alone until the age of 96, when she moved to Gaylord, Michigan. She drove her car until the age of 96. She suffered hearing loss in later life, and when she was 99 she fell and broke her hip. One of her sisters lived to be 102, while another sister died at 103. She also had two brothers who lived to be 96 and 97.

In September 2017, Martin had two living daughters, Judy Priami (aged 85), and Shirley Hollyer (aged 78); 17 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren. In August 2020, she celebrated her 110th birthday.

Martin died in Gaylord, Michigan, on 24 February 2022 at the age of 111 years, 190 days. At the time of her death, she was the second-oldest known living person in Michigan, behind Irene Dunham.
