Avicia Beatrice Thorpe (née Hooper; 16 April 1908 – 24 December 2020) was an American supercentenarian who was the oldest known person living in the U.S. state of Virginia at the time of her death. Her age is currently unvalidated by the Gerontology Research Group.
Biography
Thorpe was born in Danville, Virginia, USA, on 16 April 1908. Here parents were Rev. Reuben and Priscilla (Nash) Hooper. After graduating from high school, she enrolled at Bluefield State College in Bluefield, West Virginia, graduating as salutatorian with a bachelor’s degree in social sciences. She began teaching English at Westmoreland High School in 1933, before moving to John M. Langston High School when it opened in 1936. She taught for 33 years, retiring in 1966.
Thorpe was married to Rev. Charles Manley Thorpe, but never had any children. Her husband was a pastor for 29 years, and also taught at Pittsylvania County Training School. He died in 1963. For roughly the last decade of her life, Thorpe lived in a nursing home in Danville, Virginia. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, she was forced to celebrate her 112th birthday over Zoom. Several of her siblings lived into their late 80's, her younger sister, Irma, died at 92 and her older sister, Armonia, lived to be 102. She died on 24 December 2020 at the age of 112 years, 252 days.
