Faustina Sarmiento Pupo (15 February 1905 – 16 September 2019) was a Cuban supercentenarian whose age is validated by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG). She is the oldest known person ever born in Cuba as well first validated supercentenarian who lived in Cuba.

Biography

Faustina Sarmiento Pupo was born in Sao Arriba, Holguin, Cuba on 15 February 1905. Her father, Gonzalo Sarmiento, was a veteran of the Cuban War of Independence (1895–1898), the last liberation war Cuba fought against Spain. She married at the age of 17, and had five daughters.

In 2018, she had 30 grandchildren, 56 great-grandchildren, 41 great-great-grandchildren, and 19 great-great-great-grandchildren. At that time, her two daughters were alive at the ages of 95 and 85. Although she had problems with hearing, she had a great memory. At the age of 110, she was still able to walk unassisted.

Two of her sisters who died at the ages of 105 and 99 years old.

Sarmiento Pupo died in the city of Holguin, Cuba, on 16 September 2019, at the age of 114 years, 213 days. At the time of her death, she was the oldest living person in North American and Caribbean regions, and the sixth-oldest living person in the world, behind Kane Tanaka, Lucile Randon, Francisca Celsa dos Santos, Jeanne Bot, and Shigeyo Nakachi. Her oldest living daughter, Esther Marina Rodriguez Sarmiento, was 96 years old (born 22 August 1923).
