Eva Grafunder(17 June 1903 – 14 July 2013) was a Polish-Canadian supercentenarian whose age is currently pending by the Gerontology Research Group.
Biography
Eva Grafunder was born in East Prussia, Germany (now Warmia-Masuria, Poland), on 17 June 1903. She married and had a daughter, Hannelore, born in 1933. By the end of World War II, Mrs. Grafunder was widowed, and, fearful of nearing Red Army, fled her home together with her mother, sister and daughter. Reportedly, their journey was very harsh. Mrs. Grafunder contacted typhoid and became ill, but fortunately recovered. Soon after, she and her family, hitched a ride with a German minesweeper that was on its way to Denmark. The conditions at the refugee camp in Denmark were equally harsh. The family lived in crammed barracks surrounded by barbed wire with 40 others and slept on straw mattresses infested with bugs. Respite came two years later when Grafunder reunited with her brother, a soldier who had been desperately trying to find his family. The family relocated to Kassel, a city in West Germany, where they slowly rebuilt their lives.
At the age of 95, Grafunder emigrated to Brampton, Peel region, Ontario, Canada to live with her daughter and son-in-law. She died on 14 July 2013, aged 110 years, 27 days.
