Emma Hough was born as Emma Margaret Burkhart in Fayette County, Iowa, United States on 2 December 1904. She was the daughter of Albert Burkhart and Sarah (née Lanterbach) Burkhart. She graduated from school in 1926, having degrees in English and Biology. In 1928, she married Charles Hough, also from Iowa. They both worked as teachers. Charles died in 1981 aged 77 or 78.
