Emily Isabel Currey (née Vautier; 16 July 1880 – 24 August 1990) was an Australian-born Canadian supercentenarian whose age is currently unvalidated by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG). She was the first known supercentenarian claimant to have emigrated from Australia to another country.
Biography
Currey was born Emily Isabel Vautier on 16 July 1880 in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia as the 10th of 11 children born to Joseph Garnault Vautier and Amy Byron (née Cooke) Vautier. In 1910, she joined her sister in Los Angeles, where she met and married her first husband, a man with the surname Cantelon.
The couple moved to Manitoba, Canada, where they were farmers until Mr. Cantelon died shortly before the Great Depression. After her first husband died, Emily went to live with a friend of hers until she married her second husband, Dr. George Currey. The Curreys were married for 17 years until George died. In 1960, after her second husband’s death, Currey moved to British Columbia, Canada. In December 1982, she moved into a nursing home. At 103, she had at least one living child, a daughter aged 84.
Currey died on 27 August 1990 at the age of 110 years, 39 days. She may have been the fifth-oldest known person in Canada and the second-oldest in British Columbia at the time of her death.
