Biography

Elzona Maxey was born as Elzona Selby in Adair, Kentucky, USA on 30 November 1875, the daughter of Simon and Elizabeth McKinley Selby. She moved to Texas in the beginning of the 20th century and married John Maxey in Grayson, Texas on 6 August 1908. The couple had two children, Margaret and Benton. Following the death of their son Benton the family moved to Atoka, Oklahoma, where Mrs. Maxey lived for the rest of her life. Her distant cousin, Anna Mae Pendley (1899–2009) lived to be 110.

Elzona Maxey died in Atoka, Oklahoma, USA on 25 April 1988, aged 112 years, 147 days. She was believed to have been the World's Oldest Person since the death of Orpha Nusbaum, but the validation of Jeanne Calment and Lydie Vellard meant that both Nusbaum and Maxey lost their titles.
