Elizabeth Mary Munson (née Turner; 6 May 1872 – 2 February 1984) was an Irish supercentenarian who was the oldest living person in Ireland at the time of her death. As of 2020, she is the third-oldest Irish person ever recorded, after Kathleen Snavely and Katherine Plunket.

Munson's age is currently pending validation by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG).

Biography

Munson was born on 6 May 1872 in Dublin, Ireland (then part of the UK). She worked as a tailor in a department store. She was married to Sgt. William Munson from 1908 until his death in 1915. The couple had two sons and one daughter, May Nicholson, who lived to the age of 99.

Munson died in Dublin, Ireland on 2 February 1984, at the age of 111 years, 272 days. At the time of her death, she had 10 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Longevity Records

Munson likely became the oldest person living in Ireland at some point between 1975 and 1977. Upon reaching the age of 110 in 1982, Munson became the second recorded supercentenarian in Ireland's history. At the time of her death in 1984, she was just eight weeks shy of surpassing Katherine Plunket's record which had stood for well over half a century.

As of 2020, Munson is the third-oldest Irish person ever recorded, her age having been surpassed by Kathleen Snavely in 2013. However, as Snavely emigrated to the United States, Munson remains the second-oldest person ever to have died in Ireland.
