Elizabeth Hanna was born on 4 April 1907 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. She later married and had a son, Ralph, in around 1939. Elizabeth spent most of her adult life in Toronto’s annex neighbourhood with her family.
After the death of her husband, Elizabeth lived on her own until she was 102, when she was injured as a result of a fall. It was then that she moved into Sunnycrest Nursing Home in Whitby, Ontario.
On her 109th birthday, a celebration was held in Elizabeth’s nursing home, with three generations of her family attending. Elizabeth often whispered or wrote on a board when she wanted to communicate. Her family claim that her secret to a long life is loving the outdoors, reading books, and having a positive attitude. Elizabeth said her secret was “just keep breathing”.
