Biography

Elise Madge Henry was born on 21 January 1908 in Kingston, Jamaica, to parents Uriah Manassah Henry and Nora Clementina (née Francis) Henry. Her father was a sanitation inspector, and he didn’t like his name, so signed everything as UM Henry. She had several siblings, some of whom died in infancy. She recalled her parents being quite strict, but not too strict.

Henry attended Chetolah Park Elementary School in Kingston. She then attended Kingston Technical High School. Her mother died when she was nine years old, aged in her 40s, and her father died aged 52. She was looked after by an older sibling from then on.

As an adult, Henry spent 40 years in the United States working as a private nurse. After that, she spent 10 years in England and then went back to the United States, where she retired. She eventually returned to her home country of Jamaica in 1992, aged 84. She never married nor had children.

Henry celebrated her 110th birthday in 2018 with four generations of nieces and nephews as well as her caregivers. Despite being wheelchair-bound, she was still mentally sharp, able to recall the full names of her parents and all her siblings.

Elise Henry died in Havendale, St. Andrew, Jamaica around 23 October 2018 at the age of 110 years, c.276 days.
