Biography

Eleanor McNeill was born Eleanor Anderson on 7 March 1887 in Aberlour, Moray, Scotland as the fourth of eight children born to her parents, James and Helen Anderson. In 1909, she arrived in Quebec with her family and married Roderick McNeill on 15 March 1911 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, eight days after her 24th birthday. The McNeills had two daughters, Eleanor and Violet (who later married I. H. Cohen).

Roderick McNeill died in 1938 aged 57 after 27 years of marriage. McNeill’s eldest daughter, also named Eleanor, passed away in 1996. On 3 March 1998, eight days before her death, McNeill became the second-oldest living person in Canada following the death of 115-year-old Mary Ann Rhodes. She would celebrate her 111th birthday four days later.

McNeill died on 11 March 1998 in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia at the age of 111 years, 4 days. She was survived by her daughter Violet Cohen, three grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. A memorial service was held for her on 8 May 1998.
