Eleanor Bearwald (née Stanley; 10 August 1910 – 3 October 2020) was an American supercentenarian whose age is currently unvalidated by the Gerontology Research Group.

Early Life and Family

Bearwald was born on 10 August 1910 in Forest Park, Illinois, USA. She was the first of two children born to Ladislav and Rose Stanley. She was baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Forest Park, and remained a Lutheran throughout her life. In 1929, she met Erwin Bearwald, but due to economic pressures resulting from the great depression, they did not get married until 1935.

In 1942, the Bearwalds purchased their first home in Maywood, Illinois, where they resided until they moved to a new home in Addison, Illinois in 1956. The couple had one child, Ronald. They loved to travel, and did so at first by car whenever Erwin had vacation time from his job. Their road trips took them to every capital city in the 48 continental United States. They then began travelling further afield, visiting Alaska, Hawaii, Canada, Mexico, and at least 13 European countries.

Later Life and Death

After her husband died in January 1984, Bearwald continued to live in her Addison, Illinois home for another 20 years before moving in to a retirement community in Northbrook, Illinois, in 2004. She initially lived independently in her own apartment, before later moving to assisted living and then nursing care. An avid reader throughout her life, she switched to audiobooks when her vision became impaired after reaching the age of 100.

In 2017, Bearwald's 107th birthday was featured on The Today Show's regular "Smucker's birthdays" segment. She died on 3 October 2020 at the age of 110 years, 54 days. At the time of her death, she had five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
