Biography

Kindred was born on 10 November 1908 in Cecil, Alabama, United States. Her parents, William Baldwin and Leona (née Reynolds) Baldwin had 16 children: James E., Jesse, Alex, Will, OG, Franklin, Samuel, Solomon, Ben-nie G., Mary Lee Kindred, Ioda Jackson, Elgirtha Harvey, Frazier Pollard, Willie Baldwin Smith and Leona Baldwin Smith. Kindred attended Jones Chapel Elementary School and resided in Bullock County her entire life. She remembered the major wars because she "lived them". She had a brother-in-law that served in World War I, a brother in World War II, a nephew in the Korean war and a son who served in Vietnam. Effie accepted Christianity in her life at an early age and joined Mountain View Baptist Church.

Kindred married Charlie D. (Dan) Kindred. At this time she joined his family church - Jones Chapel AME Zion Church where she served for many years as a Missionary, Class leader, Sunday School Teacher, and on the Usher Board. The couple had 7 children. One of her twin boys passed away at the age of 5 due to complications from measles. Her eldest son James passed away in December 2000. She is survived by 5 children; Ruby, Effie, William, Sam and Susie.

For the last 11 years of her life, she had been a resident of Southern Springs Healthcare in Alabama, where she reluctantly moved to at the age of 99, still insisting she could “Take care of myself”. In 2009, she had seven siblings still alive, three were in their 90's, three were in their 80's and one was 101. Of those seven, two lived more than 100 years, four lived into their 90's and the last one was two months short of 90 when he passed away.

Kindred passed away on 10 April 2019 in Troy, Alabama, United States at the age of 110 years, 151 days.
