Biography

Carlos Valenzuela was born in Lima, Peru on 24 September 1905 to Manuel Valenzuela and Magdalena Castro. He was baptized on 16 January 1906. His mother, Magdalena Castro (1887–1980), lived to be 93 years.

While in Peru, Valenzuela worked as a shoemaker for his father, and followed his brother to the United States, finding work at a lamp making company that has since closed. He was an avid soccer player in his younger years, and walked until the age of about 105. He moved into a nursing home when he was 108, following the death of his wife, who was in her 90s.

Valenzuela celebrated his 110th birthday at his Boulevard East retirement home, Alaris Health, with a festive party attended by several family members, including his 9 year old great-granddaughter, who helped him dance. To prove his age to journalists reporting on the celebration, his relatives brought a copy of his 1905 birth certificate. At the time of his 110th birthday, he was described as being sharp-witted and lucid, with good eyesight for his age. Aside from poor hearing, his health remained good, and wasn't on any medication.

Carlos Valenzuela died in Guttenberg, New Jersey, USA on 29 March 2016 at the age of 110 years, 186 days.
